Travel Essentials
01
Language & Culture
Learn basic Spanish phrases before arriving, but remain open to learning from the people around you. Respect local customs, ask thoughtful questions, and avoid treating Peru or Afro-Peruvian communities as one single experience.
02
Essential Gear
Lima’s weather can feel cool, humid, and overcast, especially during winter. Pack layers, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, medications, and a small first-aid kit.
03
Food & Water
Explore Peruvian dishes such as ceviche, anticuchos, tacu tacu, and carapulcra. Avoid untreated tap water; use sealed bottled, properly boiled, or purified water for drinking and brushing your teeth.
04
Travel Insurance
Choose insurance that covers medical care, emergencies, theft, trip interruptions, andn (if needed) medical evacuation. Keep digital and printed copies of your insurance information and prescriptions.
05
Responsible Tourism
Support local artisans and community-owned businesses. Ask permission before photographing people, ceremonies, artwork, or sacred spaces, and allow communities to represent themselves in your storytelling.
06
Connectivity
Check whether your phone is unlocked before traveling and consider purchasing a Peruvian SIM or eSIM. Download offline maps and Spanish translation tools, and carry a portable charger. Your phone’s hotspot may be enough for occasional laptop use, but confirm your plan’s data and tethering limits.
Carry a combination of cards and Peruvian soles, notify your bank before traveling, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Save secure digital copies of your passport, visa, insurance, prescriptions, and emergency contacts.
